ISIS militants left behind thousands of improvised mines in Sinjar, Iraq with the intention of destroying the Yazidi homeland and ensuring the community could never return.

In recent years, teams of local community members have bravely cleared hidden mines from farmlands and public spaces. But remaining mines, particularly those concentrated in South Sinjar, continue to impede the safe return of still displaced Yazidis.

Nadia’s Initiative has been advocating and working with de-mining groups to clear Sinjar of explosives to enable a safe and sustainable return migration and facilitate the long-term rebuilding of the region. On this #MineAwareness day, we highlight the continued need to de-mine Sinjar.
